Overview

The MA in Islamic Studies program is designed to equip students with excellent theoretical knowledge and expertise relevant to lecturers, researchers, religious leaders, and policy makers to deal with a variety of theological, political, and socio-cultural issues in the contemporary era. Students will take several courses that constitute the core of their expertise in either classical Islamic discourse, Islamic law, or contemporary expressions of Muslim societies. For those wishing to pursue further education, the MA in Islamic Studies program will provide substantive and theoretical knowledge of key issues in the study of Islam and a strong methodological foundation to conduct further research.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the degree, students are expected:

  • To demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of the basic universal values of Islam by critically examining the foundational and non-foundational sources of Islam.
  • To show a capability to demonstrate the interconnectivity between the major classical texts and academic scholarship, and the contexts in which those texts are interpreted and translated into a variety of forms.
  • To critically analyse and explain how the basic universal values of Islam are translated into a wide variety of institutions.
  • To analyse Islam and the dynamics of Muslim societies from social, political, and cultural perspectives.

A student pursuing an MA in Islamic Studies at UIII must complete a minimum of 56 credits within 6 semesters, consisting of foundation, core, and elective courses.

Entry Requirements

All documents must be in English.

  • GPA of at least 3.00 on a scale of a maximum of 4.00, proven by undergraduate academic certificate and transcript.
  • A valid English language proficiency certificate: TOEFL iBT 80 or ITP 525 or IELTS 6.5 (MA in Islamic Studies); or IELTS 6.5 (SOAS) / IELTS 7.0 (University of Edinburgh) for MA Dual Degree Program. The certificate must be issued within the past 24 months.
  • Curriculum vitae (in tabular form).
  • Provide two academic reference contacts.
  • Motivation letter.
  • Registration fee: IDR 750,000 (Indonesian nationals) / USD 50 (international applicants).

Double Degree

Offered in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh and SOAS University of London. Students may earn a dual Master’s degree.
